We will explore how to recognize flattering light and how to manipulate it while shooting in a less controlled environment than a studio. We will explore how we can work collaboratively with our subject to achieve a portrait that captures their personality and style. We will learn how to make different lighting situations work for us. We will touch a little on manual settings, but if you feel you need more instruction, please attend my beginner's photography class first.

    Cheryl Vandegrift
Cheryl is a professional photographer with around 6 years of experience. She originally arrived in Fayetteville back in 1994, stationed at Pope Air Force Base, and decided to make it her home after her service. Cheryl is a dedicated homeschooling mother of twin teenagers, and she's proud to have an 18-year-old graduate.

Specializing in capturing the essence of couples, maternity, and families, Cheryl's portfolio also includes headshots, branding photos, and coverage of special events. As a natural light photographer, she relies solely on the beautiful light nature provides, without the use of off-camera flash. Her signature style leans towards lifestyle and candid photography, favoring genuine moments over overly posed shots. Cheryl is enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge and experiences with others. She's eager to connect with you and explore the world of photography together.

Cheryl Vandegrift is available for private bookings

I am available every day but Mondays. Individual days may vary due to teens' activities and jobs. I can teach you beginning photography, as well as how to shoot and pose portraits, nature, or city backgrounds. I can also instruct you on lifestyle photography and how to get real, natural reactions rather than relying on posing.

Ive spent a lot of time lately exploring the various State Parks that North Carolina has to offer. While hiking one of the trails at Carver Creek State Park there must have been a controlled burn nearby which filled the forest with smoke for the added effect!

Shot was taken at air show I attended at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC in 2019 that featured the Thunderbirds and the F-22. This was the second air show I attended at Goldsboro with the Thunderbirds as the feature. The show was awesome, filled up two memory cards during this show. I am not a professional photographer by no means. The camera that I have been using for a while are the Nikon D50 and D90, (need to up grade) with 18-200 and 70-200 lens.

First off, I have to say that I am not a "Birder". But I love challenging my photographic skills and abilities. The American Kestrel is not a big bird, and it is fast. So even when you know its takeoff is imminent, it is still hard to get a nice clear photo of the bird. This particular image was shot with a Canon R6 camera, with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens at 1/5000 sec, f/7.1 and ISO 4000. I used the animal eye-tracking feature of this mirrorless full frame camera, and was very plea

I had shot the sunrise at Horseshoe Bend the same morning and was hoping for a blazing sunset at this location after talking to the other photographers present at sunrise. Even with some clouds, we were not so fortunate and when the sunlight was casting on the water I switched to black and white mentality and was able to capture this photo. You can just see the setting sun in the upper right corner for the photo.

I was on a leisurely family walk going towards Nene Valley Railway in Wansford when serendipity struck, and I found myself in the perfect spot to capture a captivating moment. The sight of a steam train preparing to depart from the station sparked a rush of excitement and nostalgia. The timeless allure of steam trains and the bustling atmosphere of the railway added a touch of history and charm to my photography experience.

It was a cloudy day and my cat was up in the tree. he had always had very deep blue, but with all the defused light from the clouds and the contrast from the tree bark, It sent me running for my camera.I shot it on a Nikon D5600, with a 70 - 200mm lens, on January 25, 2024.I shot it raw while in manual mode, the aperture was 4.1, the iso 100, and the shutter speed was 1 over 700.

This one took a bit of planning to catch the Milky Way in the place I wanted, the Weather, Moon, and Milky Way core all had to be right and as you might guess it took a few seasons for it to come together, every time it was a walk in the dark over the sand dunes from Pennard to get to the right spot on the cliff edge, I'm a little picky when it comes to star trails and although there are certain formulas for shutter speed to "visibly" limit star trails I'd rather have none, so I dragged my Star
